Intense is the word for Ray Liotta. He specializes in psychopathic characters who hide behind a cultivated charm. Pat O'Brien

Date of Birth:11 November 1899, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
Date of Death:15 October 1983, Santa Monica, California, USA
Mini Biography
Brought forth in midland America, far away from any port of immigrant entry, the U.S.-born Pat O'Brien would yet one day come to be called Hollywood's "Irishman in Residence."Deciding against entering seminary to study for the Roman Catholic priesthood, Pat O'Brien would not wear the clerical collar in real life. But he made up amply for that by performing memorably as priest in so many of his films. He appeared as Father Dunne, Father Duffy, Father Connolly, Father This, Father That. And although never a policeman, in movies he carried the cop's badge often enough. And often enough as well, one could discern in his delivery the affectation of an Irish brogue, which, although stereotypical, generally charmed his movie audiences. (His often simultaneous puffing on a tobacco pipe could not have but enhanced his Irishman's aura, at least amongst narrowbacks and non-Irish in the States and elsewhere.) Pat O'Brien excelled in roles of beneficent men but could also give convincing performances as wise guys or con artists. He was a most popular film star during the 1930s and 1940s. Over almost five decades, he co-starred in nine films with 'James Cagney', including his own screen swansong, "Ragtime", in 1981.

James Cagney

Date of Birth17 July 1899, New York, New York, USA
Date of Death30 March 1986, Stanfordville, New York, USA (heart attack following illness from diabetes)
Birth NameJames Francis Cagney
NicknameThe Professional Againster Jimmy

Height5' 6½" (1.69 m)
Mini Biography
One of Hollywood's pre-eminent male stars of all time (eclipsed, perhaps, only by "King" Clark Gable and arguably by Gary Cooper or Spencer Tracy), and the cinema's quintessential "tough guy." Was also an accomplished if rather stiff hoofer and easily played light comedy. Ending three decades on the screen, retired to his farm in Stanfordville, New York (some 77 miles/124 km. north of his New York City birthplace), after starring in Billy Wilder's One, Two, Three (1961). Emerged from retirement to star in the 1981 screen adaptation of E.L. Doctorow's novel Ragtime (1981), in which he was reunited with his frequent co-star of the 30's, the actor 'Pat O'Brien', and which was his last theatrical film. (Ironically - or fittingly, if one prefers - it was O'Brien's last film as well.) Cagney's final performance came in the title role of the made-for-TV movie Terrible Joe Moran (1984) (TV), in which he played opposite Art Carney.

Based on Nicholas Pileggi's book WISEGUY, Martin Scorsese's GOODFELLAS is a wry, violent, and exhilarating film about the life of Henry Hill, an aspiring criminal who ends up in the FBI's witness protection program after testifying against his former partners. As a poor Irish-Italian growing up in 1950s New York City, Hill (Ray Liotta) rises through the ranks of his Brooklyn neighborhood's organized crime branch, and with money from the mob he begins living the good life, complete with a beautiful bride, Karen (Lorraine Bracco), a fancy house, and the best seats at the most exclusive restaurants. A botched robbery lands Henry in prison for a brief period of time, and when he gets released, his reckless infidelities and drug abuse damage his association with his adopted family. Scorsese's film is a visual and sonic onslaught, featuring a brilliant pop-music soundtrack and stunning camera work--including the infamous Steadicam one-take that introduces the audience to the Copacabana's patrons. He uses the songs to infuse a breathtaking, invigorating rhythm into every scene. As the psychopathic Tommy DeVito, Joe Pesci delivers an unforgettable performance that is alarming in its cold-blooded callousness, helping to cement GOODFELLAS' place as a classic portrait of life in the mob.
